Join us for a day of tech talk with LYRASIS Technology Services Staff Jennifer Bielewski. During this day long session, participants will learn how to be prepared with technology and keeping up with the present and future technology trends. Librarians, staff and those interested in technology are invited to participate.

Participants will gain a greater understanding of communications technologies, will be able to define a variety of technology related terms, understand new technology trends and their impact in major focus areas for libraries, see examples of how technologies are used specifically to accomplish library objectives, identify resources for keeping up with technology more effectively and identify the technology needs of each institution in terms of actionable items to incorporate into a technology plan.

9:30am - 10:00am          Registration (light refreshments)

10:00am - 11:00am        Let’s Talk Technology: 20 Questions & Answers on Technology

In this 1 hour session, participants will be introduced to typical or not so typical tech questions patrons or staff may ask about technology and be pointed to online resources that may answer the technology dilemma. This session takes a practical look at how one uses easily accessed, free online resources to answer a wide range of reference questions from real library users! This session, not only informative, will serve as an ice-breaker for the day and allow for free-flow discussion into what sorts of information and support is needed in libraries for technology and serving patrons with technology needs.

11:00am - 12:00pm       A Technology Plan for the Future: It's not a WYSIWYG World

In this 1 hour session, participants will actively participate in forming a technology plan for their library. It's not a WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET world, we can have some control and plan for implementing, securing and provide technology and access for years to come.

12:00pm - 1:30pm        Lunch on your own

1:30pm - 2:30pm         Driving Technology: Decision Support

In this 1 hour session, we'll identify useful tools that can support decision-making and create free, web-based versions for library self-use. These tools will enable libraries to look at products (open source or not) from the library requirement perspective as well as product functionality. Readiness assessment tools will assist libraries in evaluating local conditions to assess what resources exist or are needed to acquire, adopt, and support open source products. Selection tools will provide a structure for looking at such factors as usability, scalability, documentation, upgrade frequency, customization, maintenance requirements, community adoption levels, system support needs, and security in addition to product features.

2:30pm - 3:30pm        Trendspotting: Trends in Technology

In this interactive session, participants will key in on and discuss important technology trends and new developments in key areas including social media, cloud computing, open source, portable devices and wireless technologies, searching & discovery, digitization and open access.
