A multitude of forces and circumstances predictable and unpredictable, positive and negative, internal and external have led to reconsideration of traditional means, approaches, and roles in the worlds of publishing and scholarly communications. Libraries and librarians have been portrayed both as active participants in the changing landscape and as passive bystanders. Just where do things stand? LYRASIS Ideas & Ideas series examines current key questions and issues affecting the discussion today including:
- challenges and opportunities faced by the traditional and emerging players in the scholarly communication chain, including open accesspublishers and advocates;
- how libraries themselves are faring as content creators, hosts and proponents of institutional repositories, and partners with publishers;
- the effectiveness of content creators at connecting to users’ emerging needs and preferences, and;
- an examination of how new approaches to publishing, expanding forms of content, and additional modes of access may be leading to heightened or new information literacy needs

Libraries are changing from spaces where we “marc and park” volumes of print material into more vibrant and vital organizations that focus on both internal and external access to services and information. How are libraries using both physical and virtual spaces to meet the needs and demands of library users? During this four hour LYRASIS Ideas & Insights gathering, we will hear how information organizations are challenging traditional ideas about space in libraries, and placing collections, staff and resources in the best possible position to meet user needs--in the cloud, in the digital realm, on site and online--in the future.
