Frankly Speaking: A Note
from the Editor
Welcome
to the Library
Leadership Network Commons!
We introduce The
Commons
knowing that librarians have no
shortage of good published (and unpublished) information available to
them. Our research has shown us that the majority of this
information falls into one or more of these categories:
- Industry news synopses
- Lengthy dissertations
that
dwell on policy, legal and other issues
- Product and
service-specific: reviews and implementation
experiences
- Listservs and blogs
What we are seeking to accomplish with The Commons is to provide people
who manage libraries with the information and ideas that will help them
provide the effective leadership necessary for the success of libraries
in the 21st century. Library leaders are, in business
parlance,
general managers. As such, they are required to (among other
things):
- Make decisions
- Be change agents and
influencers of behavior
- Allocate financial and
human
resources—and decide what not
to do
- Measure results in
terms
funders will understand
- Promote and
communicate the
library and its worth to a variety of
audiences
- Make more decisions!
The information and ideas we provide will be at least one of the
following: useful, practical, applicable, fresh, thought-provoking and
occasionally controversial. They will come in the form of
easy-to-digest articles delivered electronically to your desktop as
they are authored, from authors who function either inside or outside
the library world. Most (but not all) articles will be
applicable
to libraries of all types and sizes. As a
subscriber, you
can count on receiving on average one or more articles per week, and
all articles will be archived and accessible at the Library Leadership
Network website.
We are guided in our efforts by a blue ribbon Advisory Board, and
fueled by a diverse and experienced Editorial Board. We
deeply
appreciate all of their wisdom, support, and contribution. We hope that
the readers of The Commons will get much value from their subscriptions
and that they, too, will share their thoughts and reactions about what
we present. Our standard is your total satisfaction!
I invite you to sample the free preview articles. I
hope they encourage you to join our family of subscribers.
Best wishes for success,
Frank Hermes
