Holt's Perspectives:

June 19, 2007: DCPL and SirsiDynix:  Watching and Hoping at ALA

As many of us prepare to travel to Washington, Glen Holt provides us with some humorous, and not so humorous, thoughts to have on our way to ALA Annual.

May 8, 2007: Learning from Others

In this "Perspectives" column, Glen Holt examines several topics that kept his interest during his brief vacation.

June 2007 LLN Peer Panel

Well, most of us are about to pack our bags and go spend a few days (or longer) in a place that is hot and muggy.  Which is to say that it’s time for another ALA Annual Conference!

So this month we asked our panelists to explain what motivates them to attend ALA and other similar conferences:

•    Why do you go/not go to ALA (PLA, ACRL and other similar large gatherings)?
•    What do you see as the value of ALA (et.al.) to current and future library leaders?
•    What conferences are of greatest value to you?  Why?
•    How would you like to see the ALA conference change?
•    What other relevant comments would you care to make?

May 2007 LLN Peer Panel

Now that the 2008 Presidential campaign is underway (ugh!), we thought it high time for the LLN Peer Panel to discuss Politics and the Library.  Where there are people, there are politics, and as we well know, the internal and external politics of an organization become more and more visible (and unavoidable) as we climb the career ladder.  So, we asked the following questions or our established library leaders:
  • What practices and processes have you found to be effective in dealing with library politics—the politics within the library as well as those that affect the library and its mission?
  • What successes and blunders that you have witnessed would you care to share with our readers?
  • What advice would you give future library leaders—those who are about to become exposed--about politics?
