Collaborative Retention of Print Monographs

http:// http:// http://
Offsite storage of printed collections has long been a strategy employed to balance preservation and access needs with finite limits to local library space and as one means to protect the scholarly record. Collaborative projects focused on journals, government documents, and newspapers are in place, but collective action for monographs has not yet emerged. LYRASIS, through funding provided by the Insitute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), sponsored a two-day "think tank" event in October 2010 to explore development of a collaborative framework for print monograph retention that has the potential to improve long-term preservation and storage practices for printed monographs on a national level, to establish a cooperative infrastructure that will result in efficiencies and savings for libraries, and to coordinate storage practices with digitization activities to ensure cost-effective archiving as well as reliable long-term access.

Highlights of the initiative are captured in the links below.
